WHAT CAN ONLINE QUIZZES ASSESS:

To assess or to help your students monitor their higher-order process skills (i.e., application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation), you will need to generate either multiple choice or short answer/essay items. The average multiple choice question measures only knowledge comprehension, much like true/false or matching items (click on the sample below for an enlarged view).

When constructed appropriately, however, multiple choice questions known as "interpretive exercises" can determine how well students are able to apply or analyze information (click on the sample below for an enlarged view).

Typically an interpretive exercise would have 3-4 multiple choice questions for each "story" or question "stem," but online quiz editors may not allow the instructor to place more than one multiple choice question under a stem. If this is the case for the system you are using, simply copy and paste the question stem for each multiple choice question.
