Some paintings are composed of a wide range of values.

Some paintings are composed of predominantly lighter values. These paintings are said to be in a "high key."

Other paintings are composed of predominantly darker valued pigments. These paintings are said to be in a "low key."

When you look at a representational painting, it is easy to believe the artist painted "just what he or she saw." Remember that this is seldom the case.

Artists choose, arrange and manipulate the values in their paintings to achieve different effects.
