Introduction to Formal Elements

Painters, like writers, have a basic vocabulary with which to create their art. Writers have words. Painters have formal or visual elements. In the next six lessons we will discuss the formal elements, also called the visual elements, that artists manipulate to create their paintings. In this lesson we will discuss three of those elements: point, line and shape.
