These two paintings entitled "The Last Supper" both show Christ and and his twelve apostles gathered around a table. But the artist has arranged the scene and the elements of the painting differently in each. This process of arranging is called composition. |

| In this lesson we'll discuss what the term composition means. In order to make evident the wide range of compositional strategies available to an artist in any time or place, this lesson focuses on some of the many strategies found in the paintings from a narrow time frame and a limited geographical area -- Renaissance Italy. | ||
